Tina & Ike – Nutbush City Limits

by on Feb.19, 2012, under Records

[youtube id=”ipOz_k9zvzo”]

Tina belts out tells about her old hometown Nutbush, TN over the fuzzed out guitar rifts and spacey synths laid down by Ike. Although they aint got “N0 Whiskey For Sale” in Nutbush, off of Highway Nineteen they know how to cook up one Extra Saucy and Soulful Diva.

YOU are invited to come dance the night away this Saturday!
The Skinny – Here is the headline from last week: “New York D.J. Jon Toubin in critical condition after being run over by a cab in Portland hotel room.”

Click on the link below to get the whole story:

http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2011/12/new_york_dj_jon_toubin_in_seri.html

He is now in critical condition, and benefits in his honor are popping up all over the country. We will raise money with a cash raffle Saturday night! You are also invited to donate via Paypal to ihearttoubin@gmail.com to benefit his recovery. At the very least, positive thoughts and prayers for quick recovery are extremely helpful, too.

In case you aren’t up to speed – Jon Toubin is a Houston native. This Bellaire High School alum has taken the 45rpm dance party to a whole new level conceptually, culturally, and commercially. Though known for “maximum rock and soul” dance club sets and multi-media “Happenings,” his Soul Clap and Dance-Off party have put Mr. Toubin on the map as a soul man and left a huge footprint on contemporary urban nightlife. Working over 600 gigs the last two years, Mr. Jonathan Toubin has managed to keep one boot in the counter-culture from which he emerged (punk bars, DIY basements, loft parties, art galleries, music venues, and shady afterhours spots) while crossing over to dance clubs, prestigious festivals, boutique hotels, museums, ivy league colleges, fashion parties, gay events, arena pop/rock shows, and even raves – receiving nominations for nightlife awards from the fancier side of New York culture in the process.

Beyond that he is one heck of good guy that is dedicated to getting people dancing to good tunes. If you don’t know Toubin, or the music he spins – check out this short documentary.

Houston is known to always give a helping hand. With a host of benefit events being held in New York City and other cities around the country, Houston (Jonathan Toubin’s hometown) is taking a part, too. See you Saturday

Little Willie John – Fever

by on Oct.12, 2011, under Records

[youtube id=”i93-hlwULUk”]

Many others have tried to capture the raw uncut emotion of Fever but no one matches this original recording by Little Willie John on King Records 1958, although I’ve got to say Peggy Lee gave it a doggone good try and even added her own twist with the additional verses beginning “Romeo loved Juliet,” and “Captain Smith and Pocahontas”.  This is the first of many Little Willie John 45’s we have to post so stay tuned my friends.

The Wailers – Hang Up

by on Aug.17, 2011, under Records

[youtube id=”F-xmOCYO4jo”]

The Wailer’s laid down this freaked out fuzzbuzz track on the Etiquette label back in 1965. The Wailer’s who were also know as the Fabulous Wailers or the Original wailers hailed from the Pacific North West and no doubt influenced every garage band who ever breathed. I picked up a re-issue of this garage gem in Nashville at a little Record store called Grimey’s on the south side of town.

Enjoy

Gary Walker – You Don’t Love Me

by on Jul.03, 2011, under Records

[youtube id=”0Tvz5lpzgwQ”]

Bo Diddley’s She’s Fine, She’s Mine got a fuzzed out face lift when Gary Walker got ahold of a guitar. Gary Walker played drums for The Standells when they toured the UK in 1964 and met Brian Jones who persuaded him that he should move to London. Once back in L.A Walker met up with a few other musicians and decided to hop across the pond and work on a few diddies as The Walker Brothers. Some how in the midst of all this he dished out a few hot singles of his own, like this fine gem You Don’t Love Me.

Love this cool little James Bond meets the Surf tune composed and performed by Buddy Merrill. Buddy joined the Lawrence Welk Show at age 19 and became well know for his multi-tracking recording style. Man id love to see Dick Dale and Buddy Merrill belt out a few battle riffs.  Enjoy

Raphael Saadiq – Let’s Take A Walk

by on May.06, 2011, under Records

[youtube id=”n2lE5MzjmV8″]

Were always on the hunt for a new groove and Raphael Saadiq never disappoints, this Neo-Soul movement is full of amazing acts like Sharon Jones, Black Joes Lewis and many others and always keep in mind those trail blazers that are still laying it down today like Roy Head, Archie Bell, and Lee Fields.
Talk a Walk with Rapael Saadiq and those troubles of the day just melt away.

Elvis – Let your Self Go

by on Mar.02, 2011, under Records

Soulful rocker that I believe was originally written for Elvis’ & Nancy Sinatra’s musical Speedway and was also included in Elvis’ 1968′ Comeback Special but never aired because it was pulled by the sponsors who thought it was little too risqué. See for your self, too bad this never beamed over the american airwaves those cute little pink dresses definitely piqued my fashion interests.

The Dap-Kings – Nervous Like Me

by on Jan.28, 2011, under Records

[youtube id=”Gopuh34VdZQ”]

Funky lil track by one of the groovest backing bands of modern day the Dap-kings who also happen to back the amazing funk/soul singer Sharon Jones. These guys are taking it back to the days when things were done right, with real instruments in a pure analog studio. You’ll defiantly want to keep an eye out for anything Daptone these are the same cats who discovered and helped Amy Winehouse develop her sound.
